Suri (Hindi: संजय सूरी) is an Indian actor who appears in Bollywood films.

He made his debut in 1999 with Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi. He went on to star in many supporting roles but finally got his big break with Jhankaar Beats in 2003, where audiences started to recognize him as a seasoned actor. He is co-producer and actor in his next movie I Am.[1]

Biography

Early life

Sanjay Suri was born on 6 April 1971, in Srinagar, Kashmir, where he spent 19 years of his life. He has an elder brother Raj and elder sister Vandana. Living in Srinagar he developed a strong love for nature and the outdoors. As a child Sanjay was a star squash player and was on his school and state teams. In 1990 his father was killed in a terrorist attack and the family was forced to flee to Jammu where they briefly lived in a refugee camp.[2] They then shifted to Delhi.[3]

Modelling career

When Suri moved to New Delhi in 1990, he was thrust into the world of modelling. He modelled for many companies including Gillette, Nilkamal Furniture, Times of India, Philishave, and Nescafe.

Acting career

1999 witnessed Suri's breakthrough in Bollywood with a supporting role in the movie Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, co-starring Rinke Khanna and Dino Morea. Although the movie flopped, Suri was noticed. His next films were Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence (2001), Filhaal... and the musical

Dil Vil Pyar Vyar (2002).

In 2003's Pinjar co-starring Urmila Matondkar he got rave reviews but it was not until Jhankaar Beats later that year that he became popular. His role alongside Juhi Chawla was greatly appreciated. Slowly he got more roles in movies, but his movies were not box office successes. Despite the failure of his films, his performances continued to be appreciated.

In 2005 he delivered a critically acclaimed performance in My Brother… Nikhil, as a homosexual AIDS victim, once again co-starring Juhi Chawla.[4] The movie received unanimous praise among Indian film critics. The movie fared decently in Mumbai, but was a failure elsewhere in India. His succeeding films have not done as well.

Suri and Onir (who also directed My Brother Nikhil) also worked on Sorry Bhai! and under the banner of Anticlock Films have produced I Am which weaves together four stories on different topical issues. With this film they have ventured into a new mode of production involving crowdsourcing, a concept that had not been explored before in Indian cinema. The movie is scheduled to release on 29 April 2011.[5]

Personal life

Kapoor (Hindi: कुणाल कपूर, born 18 October 1975 in Mumbai, India) is an Indian actor who appears in Hindi cinema.

Career

Kapoor began his career as an assistant director on the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Aks. He began his acting career training under theatre legend Barry John. He continued his theatre career with Motley, a theater group run by Naseeruddin Shah.[1] He made his movie debut starring opposite Tabu in Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities.

In 2006, Kunal Kapoor became an overnight sensation with the hit film Rang De Basanti. The film was critically and commercially successful; it was India's official entry to the Oscars and was nominated in the Best Foreign Film category at the 2007 BAFTA Awards.[2] His performance was acclaimed and he received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award

nomination

In 2007, he starred in the movie Hattrick. However, the movie failed to do well at the box office. His next two films, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Aaja Nachle, also failed to make an impact at the box office. Kunal Kapoor also appeared in Welcome to Sajjanpur, which released on 19 September 2008. He has endorsed popular brands like Thums up, Indian terrain, Ray Ban and Mahindra Logan. Along with actress Gwyneth Paltrow, he is also the face of the NGO Save the Children. Though his films have not done as well as expected, his popularity among female fans continues to grow. He is known to be very selective about the work he does and had a release in National Award-winning director Rahul Dholakia's Lamhaa after two years, for which he received critical acclaim.

Kapoor voiced the Indian god Rama in Mahayoddha Rama, directed by Raizada Rohit Jaising Vaid. The film is an animated mythological movie based on the Ramayana.[3] He will appear in Anurag Kashyap’s next film, where he will play Raj Comics' superhero Doga. Kapoor is scheduled to begin shooting a romantic comedy film in early 2011. He will also appear in a film called Chamkila, a biography of popular Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila.[4]

In 2009, Kunal started writing weekly columns for HT City, the lifestyle supplement of the Hindustan Times. These columns ended in November 2009 but still appear online on the social network Desimartini.[5]

As of February 2010, he has earned his skydiving qualifications at Sagar MP itself and is all set to go solo not only flying but also on skydiving adventures. In December, 2010, he was detained by police in Europe, while attempting the dangerous sport of Base jumping with a couple of his friends.

In July 2009, Hashmi claimed that a housing society in Mumbai's upmarket Pali Hill locality refused to grant him permission to buy an apartment because he is a Muslim. The housing society rejected the allegations and in turn accused Hashmi and his family of intimidatory behavior.[15] Hashmi's allegations were condemned by other Muslim actors in Bollywood, especially Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan.[16] while the Indian-Islamic Cultural Center accused Hashmi of spurring communal tensions in India.[17]

On 10 August 2009, Hashmi backtracked from his accusation and said that the housing society has not discriminated against him and termed the incident as a "miscommunication".[18]

When he began his acting career in the 1990s, he primarily starred in action films and was particularly known for his appearances in feature films commonly called the "Khiladi series", which included Khiladi (1992), Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), and Khiladi 420 (2000), as well as other action films such as Mohra (1994).[2]

He later gained more fame for his drama, romance and comedy roles.[3] He started becoming known for his performances in romance films like Yeh Dillagi (1994) and Dhadkan (2000) as well as drama films such as Ek Rishtaa (2001). His comic performances in comedy films such as Hera Pheri (2000), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Garam Masala (2005) and Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005) met with acclaim. His success further rose in 2007, when he starred in four consecutive commercial hits. He has thus established himself as one of the leading actors in Hindi cinema.

Apart from acting, Kumar worked as a stunt actor; he often performed many dangerous stunts in his films,[4] which earned him a reputation as the "Indian Jackie Chan".[2] 2008 marked his television debut as the host of the show Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi. In 2009, Kumar founded the Hari Om Entertainment production company.[5] In 2008, the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Law on Kumar in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema. The following year he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.[3]

Early life

Akshay Kumar was born in Amritsar, Punjab to a Punjabi family.[1] His father was a government employee. From a very young age, he was recognised as a performer, particularly as a dancer. Kumar was raised in Delhi's Chandni Chowk neighbourhood before moving to Mumbai.[6] In Mumbai, he lived in Koliwada, which was another Punjabi dominated area.[6] He studied at Don Bosco School and then Guru Nanak Khalsa College (King's Circle), where he participated in sports with Janpal Singh.[6]

After having obtained a black belt in Taekwondo while in India,[7] he studied martial arts in Bangkok, Thailand,[6] where he learned Muay Thai[7] and worked as a chef[6] and waiter.[7] He then came back to Mumbai, where he started teaching martial arts. One of his students happened to be a photographer and recommended him to do modelling. The student gave him a modelling assignment for a small company. For his two hours posing in front of the camera, Kumar got Rs. 5,000, compared to his previous monthly salary of Rs. 4,000. That was one of the main reasons why he chose to be a model. After a couple of months of modelling, Kumar was offered a lead role by producer Pramod Chakravarthy for the movie Deedar.[6]

Career

1990s

Kumar made his Bollywood acting debut with the 1991 film Saugandh, which was followed by the 1992 thriller film Khiladi. In 1994, his action films Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Mohra were among the highest grossing films of the year.[8] Later that year, Yash Chopra signed him for the romantic film Yeh Dillagi which was also a success.[8] He received appreciation for his performance in this film, where he played a romantic role which was different compared to his action roles. He would consequently receive his first nominations for Best Actor award at the Filmfare and Star Screen ceremonies. During the same year, Kumar also had success with films like Suhaag and the low budget action film Elaan. All these achievements, promoted Kumar as one of the most successful actors of that year.[9]

In 1995, along with his share of unsuccessful movies, he starred in the third film in his Khiladi series Sabse Bada Khiladi, which was a hit.[10] He proved to have success with the Khiladi series, as in the next year he starred in the fourth successful film with Khiladi in the title, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi opposite Rekha and Raveena Tandon. The film became one of the highest grossing films of the year.[11]

In 1997, Kumar was seen in a supporting role in Yash Chopra's hit film Dil To Pagal Hai, for which he received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award nomination. In the same year, he attempted a comedy role with the fifth film in the Khiladi series, Mr and Mrs Khiladi. Unlike his previous films with Khiladi in the title, the film failed commercially.[12] In the same way as this film, his next Khiladi releases in the following years went on to fail at the box office. In 1999, Kumar received critical acclaim for his roles in the films Sangharsh and Jaanwar. Whilst the former did not make a profit at the box office, the latter turned out to be a success.[13]

2000s

In 2000, he starred in the comedy Hera Pheri (2000) which was a commercial success.[14] He also starred in the romantic film Dhadkan later that same year which performed moderately at the box office.[14] That same year, he performed some of his most dangerous stunts in Khiladi 420, where he climbed a running plane, stood on top of the plane flying a thousand feet in the air, and jumped from the plane onto a hot air balloon.[4] In a later scene, he is also seen being chased by a car, dodging bullets, jumping off buildings, and climbing walls.[15] In 2001, Kumar played a negative role in the film Ajnabee. The film won him much acclaim as well as his first Filmfare Award for Best Villain.[1] Kumar played a role as role as a blind man in Aankhen.

The films succeeded at the box office[17][18] and his performance in the latter earned him his second Filmfare Award, for Best Comedian.[1] Apart from his action, comedy and romantic roles, Kumar displayed a flair for dramatic roles in films such as Ek Rishtaa (2001), Aankhen (2002), Bewafaa (2005) and Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005).[1]

In 2006 he starred in a sequel to Hera Pheri titled Phir Hera Pheri. As was the former, the sequel became a huge success at the box office.[19] Later that year he starred alongside Salman Khan in the romantic musical Jaan-E-Mann. The film was a well anticipated release, and despite receiving positive reviews from critics, did not do as well as expected at the box office.[19] Though the film under-performed, his role as a shy, lovable nerd was praised.[20] He ended the year with the comedy Bhagam Bhag, which was a success.[19] In that same year, he led the Heat 2006 world tour along with fellow stars Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Sushmita Sen and Celina Jaitley.[21]

2007 proved to be Kumar's most successful year during his career in the industry, and as described by box office analysts, "probably the best ever recorded by an actor, with four outright hits and no flops."[22] His first release, Namastey London, was critically and commercially successful, and his performance earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Filmfare. Critic Taran Adarsh wrote of his performance in the film, "he's sure to win the hearts of millions of moviegoers with a terrific portrayal in this film."[23] His next two releases, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, were box office successes as well.[24][25] Kumar's last release of the year, Welcome, did extremely well at the box office, receiving a blockbuster status and simultaneously becoming his fifth successive hit.[26] All of Kumar's films which released that year did well in the overseas market as well.[27]

Kumar's first film of 2008, Tashan, marked his comeback to the Yash Raj Films banner after 11 years. Although much anticipated by the public,[28] the film was a critical and commercial failure. His second film, Singh Is Kinng was a huge success at the box office and broke the first-week worldwide record of Om Shanti Om, the previous highest figure.[29] His next film was the animated film Jumbo. The year also saw Kumar making his small screen debut as the host of the successful show Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi. He later returned to host the show's second season in 2009.

In 2009, Kumar featured opposite Deepika Padukone in the Warner Bros.-Rohan Sippy production Chandni Chowk to China. Directed by Nikhil Advani, the film was a critical and commercial failure at the box office.[30] Kumar's next release was 8 x 10 Tasveer. Directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, the film was a critical and commercial failure. His next release was Kambakkht Ishq. Kumar's film Blue was released on 16 October 2009. He then appeared in the 2010 comedy, Housefull, directed by Sajid Khan which garnered the second-highest opening weekend collection of all time.[32] Kumar's next release was Khatta Meetha, directed by Priyadarshan which was an average grosser. He also appeared in Vipul Shah's Action Replayy, which was a box office failure.[33] He is co-producing a film with Russell Peters called Breakaway which is reminiscent of his own Patiala House.[34]

Saif Ali Khan has Muslim Pashtun ancestry through Nawabs of Pataudi lineage from his father's side and Hindu Bengali Tagore ancestry from his mother's side.[4][5] His paternal grandfather, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, was the Nawab of Pataudi as well as an accomplished cricketer who played for England and then for India as the captain of the team.[5] His paternal grandmother was Sajida Sultan, Begum of Bhopal and his great-uncle was Pakistani general Nawabzada Sher Ali Khan Pataudi. He only had success with multi-starrer hits like Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), Imtihaan (1995),[11] Kachche Dhaage (1999) and Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999).[12] After some box office failures he had a hit with the film Kya Kehna (2000).[13]

His acting career, more or less, went through a relative slump until 2001, when he was cast in Farhan Akhtar's contemporary drama Dil Chahta Hai.[14] He received much acclaim for his role as Sameer with critic Taran Adarsh calling it his career-best performance.[15] The success of this film firmly established Saif as one of the industry's most bankable stars.[3]

He has since had many box office successes, starting with Nikhil Advani's drama Kal Ho Na Ho (2003), co-starring alongside Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta. The film, set in New York, starred Saif as Rohit, Zinta's best friend, who later realises that he loves her.[16] The film was the second top-grossing film of the year, and Khan's performance was praised by critics. He won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award, as well as other awards in that category in other award ceremonies. Khan followed it with the leading role in Kunal Kohli's romantic comedy Hum Tum (2004), his first collaboration with Yash Raj Films. The film follows the encounters of the two main characters until they, after several years and various meetings, become friends and finally fall in love. Khan played the role of Karan Kapoor, a young cartoonist and womaniser whose relationship with Rhea Prakash, played by Rani Mukerji, changes his perception of women and life.[17] Khan's performance was applauded by both critics and audiences. He won the Best Comedian award at the Filmfare, and was conferred the coveted National Film Award for Best Actor in 2005.[18] Khan's next project with the Yash Raj Films production, Salaam Namaste (2005), became India's top-grossing film in the overseas market. The film, which was the first Indian film to be entirely shot in Australia, starred Khan and Preity Zinta as a contemporary cohabiting Indian couple.[19][20] He was also noted for his performance in a negative role in Ram Gopal Verma's Ek Hasina Thi (2004) and for his role of Shekhar Rai in Pradeep Sarkar's Parineeta (2005), an adaptation of the 1914 Bengali novella, Parineeta by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.[21]

In 2006 Khan played the protagonist in the English-language art film, Being Cyrus. His role as Cyrus got him positive reviews. In that same year, he went on to receive major acclaim for his portrayal of Iago in the Indian adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello, Omkara. Rediff.com stated, "Omkara marks Saif's emergence into the very forefront of his acting peers, and we gleefully applaud".[22] Variety film critic Derek Elley called his performance "powerhouse" and further wrote, "It's Khan's movie through and through, in a performance of rugged, contained malevolence which trades on his previous screen persona as a likable best friend as well as his stint as the manipulative outsider in 'Being Cyrus'. It's smart casting, superbly realized."[23] For his work, Khan earned the awards for Best Actor in a negative role at the Star Screen, Filmfare, Zee Cine and IIFA Awards.[24][25][26]

Khan next acted in Eklavya: The Royal Guard (2007), co-starring alongside his mother for the second time since Aashiq Awara (1993). The film was India's official entry to the Oscars, and Khan's performance as Harshwardhan was appreciated by critics. Taran Adarsh commented, "watching him emote with amazing precision makes you realise the giant strides he has taken as an actor".[27] He next appeared alongside Rani Mukerji in the family drama, Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007). Directed by Siddharth Anand, the film went on to become a box office success.[28][29]

In 2008, Khan first starred in the Abbas-Mustan thriller Race, which went on to do well at the box office.[30] This was followed by two projects produced by Yash Raj Films, Tashan and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, both of which were not successful.[30]

In 2009, Khan produced and starred in Love Aaj Kal. The film, directed by Imtiaz Ali, was a critical and commercial success.[31] He then starred in the thriller Kurbaan along with Kareena Kapoor in which he played a terrorist. The following year, Khan was awarded the Padma Shri, which is the fourth highest civilian award given by the Government of India

Khan turned producer when he setup his production company called Illuminati Films in 2009.[32] His first film, Love Aaj Kal was directed by Imtiaz Ali and featured Deepika Padukone opposite him. Upon release, the film was critically and commercially successful. Khan's second film production, Agent Vinod, will be directed by Sriram Raghavan.
