Career

Early years and playback singing

Sonu Nigam began his singing career at the age of three, when he joined his father on stage to sing Mohammad Rafi's "Kya Hua Tera Vaada, Wo Kasam Wo Irada." From then on Sonu accompanied his father on his singing appearances at weddings and parties. In his teenage years he participated in several music competitions successfully. He moved to Mumbai with his father to begin his Bollywood singing career at the age of 19.[3]

His initial years in Mumbai proved to be a struggle, beginning by singing covers of Mohammad Rafi songs, mainly for a number of "Rafi Ki Yaadein" albums released by T-Series. T-Series promoter Gulshan Kumar played a key role in identifying Sonu's talent by giving him a chance to reach a larger audience. These albums contributed to T-Series for some years although Sonu's singing style was regarded by some to be like that of a "Rafi clone". Nigam's first movie song as a playback singer was in the film Janam (1990), which was never officially released. Sonu also got a break in several radio commercials until he appeared on the popular TV show Sa Re Ga Ma, after which there was no turning back. He was trained by Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, a very fine classical singer.

Sonu started hosting Sa Re Ga Ma in 1995 with the first episode airing on the 1st of May 1995. Sa Re Ga Ma, television singing talent competition, soon became one of the most popular shows on Indian television. The format of that show gave Sonu a chance to showcase his singing skills as well as his natural charm and audience appeal. Soon after, he sang "Accha Sila Diya" on the album Bewafa Sanam (1995), which was very successful.[3] Singing offers started pouring in thereafter, albeit slowly at first. He rose to fame with the Anu Malik composed song "Sandese Aate Hain," in Border in 1997. Sonu's image as a 'Rafi clone' changed after his rendition of the Nadeem-Shravan composed song "Yeh Dil Deewana" in Pardes in the same year. Since then, he has created a unique style of his own, and has become a role model for emerging vocal talent in India.[3]

Over the years, Sonu has become a major force in the Indian music industry. He has provided playback singing for a large number of Hindi movies and won many awards. His rendition of the title song of the film Kal Ho Na Ho has been highly popular and is considered a modern legend of sorts. He is recognised for his versatile voice, with his voice adapted excellently to the actor he is singing for, as well as his excellent emotion range, with perfect singing of romantic, rock, sad, patriotic and other songs of various genres. Sonu has sung various songs in many languages besides Hindi, including Kannada, Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, English, Bhojpuri, Urdu, Nepali and Marathi.[3]

Pop albums and concerts

Sonu has released a number of pop albums, in Hindi, Punjabi and Kannada. The most recent addition to the list of Hindi releases is "Classically Mild", a semi-classical album.[4] He has also released several devotional albums, both Hindu and Islamic ones, as well as albums of Mohammad Rafi's songs. These are from the "Rafi Ki Yaadein" collection in his early years, which have been re-released in September 2007 as a 6-disc collection of 100 songs , titled "Kal Aaj Aur Kal", in Mohammad Rafi's memory.[5] In 2008, soon after releasing "Classically Mild", he released a single Punjabi track called "Punjabi Please",[6] and "Rafi Resurrected", a 2-disc collection of Mohammad Rafi songs with music by the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He has contributed to the lyrics of several of his album songs and directed the music for his album Chanda Ki Doli himself. His last album was Neene Bari Neene in Kannada.

He released a single titled "Punjabi Please" in 2008. After the untimely death of Michael Jackson, of whom Sonu Nigam is a huge fan and who has considerably influenced his singing as is evident in his rendition of "Dil Deewana" in Pardes, Sonu released a tribute song to Micheal in collaboration with his fans on facebook. The song made it to an 18-song global compilation of tribute songs CD titled "The Beat of Our Hearts""Michael Jackson Trubute portrait". Retrieved 15 Nov 2010.</ref>. Sonu Nigam is currently working on a new CD with famed Producer Rene van Verseveld at Future Sound Studios in Hollywood.

Over the years. Sonu has given concert performances in many countries, including United States, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Russia, Afghanistan, UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, West Indies, Suriname, Mauritius, Nigeria and South Africa. In May/June 2007, he participated in a star-studded show in North America called "The Incredibles" in which famed Asha Bhonsle and recent singing sensations, Kunal Ganjawala and Kailash Kher, participated. In September and October, respectively, of the same year, he gave solo concerts titled, "Simply Sonu", in Canada and Germany, (becoming the first Indian singer to perform in the latter country).[7] In April 2008, he did a marathon of concerts in various cities in India, promoting his Punjabi single "Punjabi Please".[8]

In November 2007, at the inauguration of Harvard University's 28th president, Dr. Drew Gilpin Faust, Sonu sang with the Harvard College Sangeet the late Mahatma Gandhi's favorite bhajan, " Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye".[9]

In July 2008, he participated in a three-city tour of the United Kingdom, singing numerous famous Mohammad Rafi songs with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.[10] This followed the release of these songs by the CBSO and the Indian music company Sa Re Ga Ma in a historic album entitled "Rafi Resurrected".[11]

Amongst several other concerts, he notably participated in a US tour with Sunidhi Chauhan in 2009 called "The Explosion 2009" tour and in a UK tour titled "All Izz Well" in November 2010.

Radio and acting

In 2006, Sonu Nigam hosted his own radio show called 'Life Ki Dhun With Sonu Niigaam' on Radiocity 91.1 FM, where he had the opportunity to interview several music industry greats, including the legendary Lata Mangeshkar on the last aired episode.[12]

Sonu's acting career[13] started as a child artist in a number of films including 1983's Betaab. As an adult, Sonu has acted in a few more films, namely Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani alongside Sunny Deol, Manisha Koirala and Akshay Kumar as well as other actors; Kash Aap Hamare Hote, where he plays the male lead opposite Juhi Babbar, daughter of Raj Babbar; and most recently, Love in Nepal with Flora Saini and Sweta Keswani, where he again plays a leading role. However it is to be said that all three films have not done well at the box-office. although his acting was much better appreciated in his last venture. He has not taken up acting since his last venture Love in Nepal, but has recently been said to be involved in another film as a lead actor. The film, called Ankhon Ankhon Mein is supposedly about a blind singer.

Television

Sonu Nigam was the host in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa from 1 May 1995 to 1999. He was the first host on the show. He returned on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs International as a Judge along with Suresh Wadkar in October 2007. Nigam also appeared as a Celebrity Judge on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Mega Challenge grand finale on 12 December 2009 which marked the 1000th episode.

He hosted the TV show Kisme Kitna Hai Dum on Star Plus in 2002.

Nigam appeared as the Judge for Indian Idol in season 1 (October 2004 - March 2005) and season 2 (November 2005 - April 2006). He also appeared as a Celebrity Judge in Season 3 (17 August 2007) and Season 4 (16 January 2009 and 6 February 2009).

He appeared as a Celebrity Judge on Amul Star Voice of India in August 2007 (Season 1) and in December 2008 (Season 2) and on the Grand Finale of Indian music reality show Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar on July 12, 2008.

Nigam was a Judge/Mentor on Chhote Ustaad - Do Deshon Ki Ek Awaaz (July 2010 - October 2010) along with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

He is a Judge/Mentor on the ongoing first season of X Factor (India).

Future projects

Nigam is working on an English album called Spirit Unfolding.[14]

He is working on a project called Time Travel, wherein his voice will be aligned with existing recordings of other singers in Hindi songs.[15]

Popularity in Karnataka

Sonu Nigam is popular in South India, particularly in Karnataka due to his Kannada songs.[16]

Personal life and voluntary work

Sonu Nigam comes from a singing family. Born to Agam Kumar Nigam and Shobha Nigam on 30 July 1973 in Faridabad, Haryana, India, he attended the J.D. Tytler School. He has two sisters, Meenal and Neekita. In the last few years his father has released several hit albums including "Bewafaai" and "Phir Bewafaai" and, more recently, "Bewafaai ka Aalam". Neekita is also an up coming singer and has several songs and awards to her name, both in Hindi and Kannada. Sonu married Madhurima on 15 February 2002.[17] They have a son, Nevaan, born in 2007.[18] Nevaan is also very interested in music and has recently recorded a song with Lata Mangeshkar.

Sonu Nigam practices fitness and yoga exercises, and has trained in Taekwondo.[1] He claims to be spiritual rather than religious.[19]

Nigam has done work for various charities in India as well as abroad for Dignity Foundation, various cancer organizations, leprosy organizations, blindness organizations, women's welfare organizations, kargil war affected families, earthquake affected families. He also sponsors a child from the organization “Crayon”.[1] He has made various appearances in the cause of HIV / AIDS and also has a song titled "Papa I'm sorry" relating to this. He has also released several songs and made several contributions to the cause of peace between India and Pakistan.

Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Biography

Early life and training

Rahat was born in 1974 in Faisalabad, Punjab[1] into a family of traditional musicians. The son of Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, he was trained by his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the art of classical music and Qawwali.[2][dead link]
Career

Rahat's first public performance was at the age of ten or eleven, when he toured the U.K. with his uncle in 1985, and performed solo songs in addition to singing with the Qawwali party.[3] At a concert in Birmingham on July 27, 1985, he performed the solo ghazal, Mukh Tera Sohneya Sharab Nalon Changa Ae. At a concert at the Harrow Leisure Centre in 1985, he performed the solo song, Gin Gin Taare Lang Gaiyaan Rattaan.

Paap (2004), featuring the hit song, Mann Ki Lagan, marked his debut as a Bollywood playback singer. He has become popular in India because of his Bollywood film songs.[4]

In 2010, he won "Best International Act" at the UK Asian Music Awards (UK AMAs).[5]

Soundtracks and international contributions

In a subordinate role with his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, working in collaboration with Eddie Vedder, of the American rock band, Pearl Jam, Rahat contributed to the soundtrack of the 1995 Hollywood film, Dead Man Walking.

In 2002, he worked on the soundtrack of The Four Feathers in collaboration with the American composer of orchestral and film music, James Horner.[6] Also in 2002, Rahat guested with The Derek Trucks Band on the song Maki Madni for Trucks' album, Joyful Noise.

More recently, his vocals were featured on the soundtrack of Mel Gibson's Apocalypto.

His recent works include Pakistani nationalistic songs such as Dharti Dharti and Hum Pakistan, and songs from Bollywood films.
Television

Rahat judged the show, Chhote Ustaad 2 alongside Sonu Nigam.

He was also one of the judges on the singing reality show Junoon - Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka, premièred on NDTV Imagine in 2008.[7]
Detention at New Delhi airport, 13 February 2011

On Sunday, 13 February 2011, as he was on his way back to Pakistan after attending concerts and award functions in India,[8] Rahat was detained at the Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi by officers from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, who were acting on a tip. A large amount of undeclared foreign currency (more than 140,000 US dollars) was reported to have been seized from him and members of his troupe.[9] He was released after his passport was seized, and he was asked to report on Thursday, 17 February 2011 for further questioning.[9] The release followed what were described as "frantic efforts" by Pakistani officials to secure his release: "Pakistan foreign secretary Salman Bashir called Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad Sharat Sabharwal and discussed the matter around midnight on Sunday."[8]

Narrow escape from car accident in U.S.A.

On 7 May 2011, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan narrowly escaped death when his Indian manager Chitresh Srivastava was killed in a car accident while traveling from Detroit to Chicago for a show. The car Chitresh Srivastava was traveling in crashed and flipped several times, killing him and injuring four passengers. The accident occurred on the highway in Emmett Township on Interstate 94 in Michigan. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was not in the car that crashed, but on a bus with the rest of his troupe. "He was supposed to be in the car, but for some reason he got on the bus with the rest of the band," said Bhavesh Patel, the organizer of the show.[10]

Hrithik Roshan Biography

Hrithik Roshan (Hindi: ऋतिक रोशन [ˈrɪt̪ɪk ˈroːʃən]; born 10 January 1974)^[1] is an Indian actor who appears in Bollywood films.

After having appeared in films as a child actor in the 1980s, Roshan made his film debut in a leading role in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000) for which Roshan earned his Filmfare Awards for Best Actor and Best Male Debut. In 2001, he went on to appear in the melodrama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham..., which became India's highest-grossing film in the overseas market and his biggest commercial success to date.

Following through with several unnoticed performances from 2002–03, he starred in the commercially successful Koi... Mil Gaya and its sequel Krrish, both of which won him numerous Best Actor awards.^[2] Roshan received his third Filmfare Award for Best Actor in 2006 for his performance in the action film Dhoom 2. He later received critical acclaim for his performance in Jodhaa Akbar,^[3] for which he received his first international award at the Golden Minbar International Film Festival. These accomplishments have established him as a leading contemporary actor of Hindi cinema.^[4]

Among other awards, Roshan has won six Filmfare Awards, four of which are in the Best Actor category.

His life-size wax figure was installed at London's prestigious Madame Tussauds Wax Museum on 20 January 2011, making him the fifth Indian actor to have been replicated as a wax statue in the museum.^[36]

Personal life

Roshan was born in Mumbai to a family of cinema personalities. His father, film director Rakesh Roshan, is the son of music director Roshan, while his mother, Pinky, is the daughter of producer and director J. Om Prakash. Hrithik has an elder sister, Sunaina. His uncle Rajesh Roshan is a famous music director. As a child, Roshan attended the Bombay Scottish School.^[29] He later attended Sydenham College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Commerce.^[30]

During an interview he revealed that his childhood was traumatized because of stammering, a defect that surfaced when he was around six years old and plagues him even today. "For oral tests at school, I used to bunk school, I used to fall sick, I used to break my hand, I used to get a sprain" the actor said.He however said that things improved for him gradually, after he started practicing speech therapies on a daily basis.^[31]

Roshan is married to Suzanne Roshan, owner of Suzanne Roshan's House of Design and daughter of actor Sanjay Khan. The couple have two sons, Hrehaan, born in 2006 and Hridhaan born in 2008.^[32][33] Roshan has two thumbs on his right hand.^[34] Although it is usually hidden in his films, it was not hidden in Koi... Mil Gaya, and was even used as a minor plot point, as the alien was also designed to have two thumbs.^[35]

Success, 2003–present

In 2003, he made a comeback with the science-fiction film Koi... Mil Gaya, which saw him playing a mentally disabled young man.^[8] The film was the highest grosser of the year and won him many awards, including his second Filmfare Best Actor Award and his first Filmfare Best Actor (Critics) Award.^[15] Taran Adarsh noted, "Hrithik Roshan dominates the show and packs in a power-packed performance. The role of a mentally challenged person is no cakewalk, but the actor takes to it like a fish takes to water. He manages to pull off the zero to hero routine exceptionally well. As an actor, he scales dizzier heights with this splendid performance."^[16]

Farhan Akhtar's Lakshya was Roshan's only release in 2004; the film did not do well at the box office.^[17] However, his performance was praised by critics.^[18]

Roshan took a two-year break from acting before resurfacing with the superhero film Krrish, a sequel to his 2003 film Koi... Mil Gaya which released in June 2006. The film was a major box office success and became the second highest grosser of 2006.^[19] His performance as a superhero was praised, earning him many Best Actor awards at various award ceremonies, including Star Screen and the International Indian Film Academy.^[2] IndiaFM wrote, "To state that Hrithik is the soul of Krrish would be an understatement. If the actor walked away with all noteworthy awards in Koi... Mil Gaya, it's going to be an encore with Krrish. You cannot imagine any other actor enacting the role of a gifted child with aplomb. If his mask and robe look is splendid, watch his make up, gait and mannerisms as the aged father and you had agree, he's one of the finest talents on the Indian screen today. Krrish is yet another ground-breaking film in his dazzling repertoire!"^[20]

His next film that year was Dhoom 2, a sequel to the 2004 Dhoom. Featured opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Roshan's performance in the movie not only earned him widespread critical acclaim,^[2][21] but also his third Filmfare Best Actor Award. The film went on to become the highest grossing film of 2006, as well as one of the most successful films of Bollywood.^[19][22]

In 2008, Roshan featured in Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. He played the historical role of Akbar the Great. The movie did very good business, both in India and abroad.^[13][23] His performance in the movie was widely appreciated by critics,^[2] earning him his fourth Filmfare Best Actor Award as well as his first international award for Best Actor at the Golden Minbar International Film Festival in Kazan, Russia.^[3]

Roshan then appeared in Zoya Akhtar's Luck by Chance (2009), in which he made a guest appearance. The following year, he was seen in Anurag Basu's Kites along with Mexican actress Bárbara Mori and Kangna Ranaut. The film failed to do well at the box office after taking a huge start and was eventually declared a flop. He next acted in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish opposite Aishwarya Rai. Upon release, the film received overwhelmingly positive reviews and Roshan's portrayal of Ethan Mascarenhas, a quadriplegic patient earned him several Best Actor nominations at various award ceremonies. He is currently filming for Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara ^[24] and is set to commence filming for the remake of 1990 release Agneepath in which he reprised the role of Vijay Deenanath chauhan.^[25][26]

In 2011, Roshan will be featured in a dance competition reality show called Just Dance from the Star Plus television network. He will be a judge on the show.^[27][28]

Breakthrough, 2000–2002

In 2000, Roshan made his film debut as the leading man in the film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai opposite another debutante actress Amisha Patel. The film, which was directed by his father and saw him playing a double role, proved to be very successful at the box office, becoming the highest grossing film of 2000^[5] and winner of the Filmfare Best Movie Award. Roshan's performance was well-received, and the film made him an overnight star.^[6][7][8] He eventually received both the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award and the Filmfare Best Actor Award for the role. The film entered the Limca Book of Records in 2003 for the most number of awards won by a Bollywood film – 102 awards.^[9]

Later that year, Roshan starred in Khalid Mohammed's Fiza. Although the film did poorly at the box office, his performance was praised, earning him another nomination for Best Actor at the Filmfare ceremony. Taran Adarsh from indiaFM noted, "The mainstay of the film is undoubtedly Hrithik Roshan. His body language, his diction, his expressions, his overall persona deserves great praise. With this film, Hrithik proves that there is more to him than just being a fashionable rage, a Mills & Boon lover-boy and a sex symbol. His talent comes to the fore in several scenes, especially those with Karisma. All said and done, the show belongs to Hrithik, who saves Fiza to a major extent. A brilliant performance undoubtedly!"^[10]

Roshan's last release of the year, Mission Kashmir, became the third highest grossing film of the year.^[5] His performance was once again acclaimed with one critic praising him, "Hrithik once again cuts a splendid performance as a youngster sucked in the vortex of terrorism. He is portrayed as anti-government in the early part of the film-- a bold role to play for even a seasoned actor, leave alone a budding superstar." All these achievements promoted him as one of the biggest stars in the industry.^[11]

Subhash Ghai's Yaadein was his first release in 2001. This was followed by Karan Johar's melodramatic Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which did extremely well at the box office, becoming the second-highest grossing film of 2001 and the biggest hit overseas.^[12][13] Roshan's performance was well received and his performance earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at various award ceremonies.

Roshan had an unsuccessful year in 2002 when all three of his releases – Mujhse Dosti Karoge!, Na Tum Jaano Na Hum and Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage – failed to make an impact the box office and were declared flops.^[14]

Early career, until 1999

Roshan's first movie role was as a child artist when he was six years old in the 1980s movie Aasha, where he appeared in a dance sequence as an extra. Roshan went on to play minor roles in Aap Ke Deewane (1980) and Bhagwan Dada (1986) both of which starred his father Rakesh Roshan in the leading role. He then became an assistant director assisting in the production of his father's films Karan Arjun (1995) and Koyla (1997).

Sanjay Dutt Actor Biography

Sanjay Dutt is an Indian Hindi film actor and politician. Dutt, son of Hindi film actors Sunil and Nargis Dutt, made his acting debut in 1981.

Personal life

Dutt was born on 29 July 1959 to Bollywood actors Sunil Dutt and Nargis. He was educated at the Lawrence School Sanawar. Dutt married actress Richa Sharma in 1987.^[3] Sharma died of brain tumor on 10 December 1996.^[3] The couple have a daughter, Trishala, born in 1989, who lives in the United States.^[4] Dutt's second marriage was to model Rhea Pillai in 1998.^[5] They divorced in 2005. Dutt married Manyata (also known as Dilnawaz Sheikh)^[6] in 2008, after two years of dating.^[7] On 21 October 2010, he became a father to twins, a boy named Shahraan and a girl named Iqra.^[8]

Sanjay started doing drugs casually in college. When he got into films, he used his actor's fees to fuel his drug addiction. This addiction continued for 8 years. After his family discovered his drug problems, he approached his father for helping him. After spending 2 years in Jackson, MS recovering from his drug addiction, he returned to Mumbai. [1]

Film career

As a child actor, Dutt appeared in the 1971 film Reshma Aur Shera, starring his father. He appears briefly as a qawali singer in his first film appearance. Dutt made his Bollywood movie debut with Rocky in 1981. He went on to act in many 1980's films including Vidhata, Jeeva, Naam and Taaqatwar.

In the 1990s Dutt acted in films such as Sadak and Khoon Ka Karz. He starred in the 1991 movie Saajan for which he was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actor Award. In 1993 he starred in the movie Khal Nayak for which he earned his second Filmfare Best Actor Award nomination. In 1999's Vaastav: The Reality, he finally won his first Filmfare Best Actor Award.

In the 2000s Dutt acted in many films such as Mission Kashmir, Jodi No.1, Hathyar, Kaante, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, Dus, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Dhamaal, Blue (2009), All The Best: Fun Begins and Knockout (2010). During this time he got several more nominations and awards. Now he is all set to make his debut as a producer with the film Rascals, and Khotey Sikkey under the banner of Sanjay Dutt Productions Pvt Ltd.

Illegal possession of arms

Due to terrorist interactions, and supposed weapons possession, on 19 April 1993, Sanjay was arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA).^[9] He spent 16 months in jail as an undertrial until he was granted bail in October 1995 by the Supreme Court of India.

In November 1993, a 90,000-page long primary chargesheet was filed against the 189 accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case including Sanjay.^[10]

In March 2006, when framing muthar charges against extradited Abu Salem and co-accused Riyaz Siddiqui in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case, the prosecution said that Salem delivered 9 AK-56 rifles and some hand grenades to actor Sanjay Dutt at his Bandra house in the second week of January 1993.^[11]

On 13 February 2007, the special branch of Mumbai police arrested Abdul Qayyum Abdul Karim Shaikh, a close aide of Dawood Ibrahim and wanted by Mumbai Police Special Task Force for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts from Mumbai.^[12] Qayuum had been named by Sanjay Dutt in his confessional statement. Sanjay had said that he met Qayuum in Dubai in September 1992 and bought a pistol from him. According to CBI, the pistol was sold to Sanjay at the instance of Dawood's brother Anees Ibrahim.^[13]

On 31 July 2007, Dutt was sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment for illegally possessing weapons.^[14] At the same time, Dutt was also "cleared of terrorism conspiracy charges in the blasts" related to the 1993 bombings.^[14] According to The Guardian, "The actor claimed he feared for his life after the notorious "Black Friday" bombings, which were allegedly staged by Mumbai's Muslim-dominated mafia in retaliation for deadly Hindu-Muslim clashes a few months earlier. But the judge, Pramod Kode, rejected this defence and also refused bail."^[14] Dutt was immediately taken into custody and sent to Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail. As the sentence was pronounced, Dutt was "visibly shocked and was seen shivering and holding back tears".^[9]

On 2 August 2007, Sanjay Dutt was moved from Arthur Road jail in Mumbai to the Yeravada Jail in Pune.^[15] On 7 August 2007, Dutt appealed the sentence.^[16] Later, on 20 August 2007, the Supreme Court of India granted Dutt interim bail. He was released after Yeravada Jail authorities received a copy of the court's bail order. The bail was valid until the time the special TADA court, which sentenced Dutt on 31 July, provides a copy of its judgment to him.^[17] Dutt was released from jail on 23 August.^[18] On 22 October 2007 Dutt was back in jail but again applied for bail. On 27 November 2007, Dutt was granted bail by the Supreme Court.^[19] He currently has an appeal for an acquittal pending.^[20] In January 2009, Dutt announced that he would contest the 2009 Lok Sabha elections on the Samajwadi Party ticket.^[21] However, he withdrew his candidacy in March 2009 after the Supreme Court refused to suspend his conviction.^[22]

International humanitarian initiatives

On 16 December 2008, he was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for IIMSAM - the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition. He will be promoting the use of Spirulina to help the organization's advocacy and endeavor against malnutrition and hunger. His role will also support IIMSAM's efforts to secure the United Nations Millennium Development Goals by mainstreaming the use of Spirulina to eradicate malnutrition, achieve food security and bridge the health divide with a special priority for the developing and the least developed countries.^[23]

Personal life

Khan became engaged to his long-time girlfriend, Avantika Malik, on 16 January 2010 in the farm house of Avantika's family in Karjat near Navi Mumbai.^[16] The couple married on 10 January 2011 at a private civil ceremony at Aamir Khan's home in Pali Hill, Mumbai.^[17]

Television

Khan co-hosted the 54th & 56th Filmfare Awards alongside Ranbir Kapoor. Along with his uncle Aamir Khan, he appeared on the popular television show Dus Ka Dum hosted by Salman Khan.^[13] He also appeared on the show, Tere Mere Beach Mein along with Kareena Kapoor.^[14] In 2010, he made an appearance on the show Koffee with Karan alongside Ranbir Kapoor.^[15]

2008-present

Khan made his debut as a lead actor in the 2008 film Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na directed by Abbas Tyrewala, produced by Aamir Khan and Mansoor Khan and co-starring Genelia D'Souza. The film received rave reviews from critics and proved to be one of the biggest hits of the year.^[10] Khan was furthermore nominated for Best Male Debut at the 54th Filmfare Awards and won it along with Farhan Akhtar.

His next movie was Kidnap with Sanjay Dutt and Minissha Lamba, where he played a negative role. The movie flopped at the box office, attributed by critics to its poorly executed direction. However, Khan's performance was appreciated and earned him an IIFA Award nomination in 2009. Khan made his next appearance in the action film, Luck with Shruti Haasan and Sanjay Dutt.^[11]

Child artist

Khan made appearances as a child artist in his uncle Aamir's films, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988)^[9] and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992). Both times he played the role of a young Aamir Khan. He aspired to be a director, as that was his original plan before he entered Bollywood as an actor. Khan joined Kishore Namit Kapoor's Acting Institute in Mumbai.

Early life

Khan was born to Anil Pal, a Hindu Bengali^[4][5] and Nuzhat Khan in Madison, Wisconsin, USA.^[6] His father works as a consultant at LinkedIn in Silicon Valley. His parents divorced when he was one and a half years old and he replaced his surname Pal with Khan.^[7] He is the nephew of actor Aamir Khan, director Mansoor Khan and the grandson of Nasir Hussain, a noted director and producer. In India, he studied at Bombay Scottish School but he left that school and transferred to a boarding school in Ooty.^[8]

Rahul Mahajan to groove in Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa

New Delhi, Dec 2 – After getting married on a TV show, Rahul Mahajan may soon put on his dancing shoes for Sony TV’s dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa 4′.

Rahul, who is becoming popular on the small screen through his presence on reality shows, has been approached to take part in the show, but he is yet to confirm his participation, informs a source.

Earlier, Rahul, son of late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan, had featured in ‘Bigg Boss’ and conducted his own ’swayamvar’ through Imagine TV’s ‘Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega’, apart from being a judge on comedy show ‘Chhote Miyan’.

‘Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa 4′, set to begin Dec 12, features Madhuri Dixit, Malaika Arora Khan and Remo D’Souza as judges. The line-up of contestants on the upcoming season is rumoured to be dominated by a lot of TV actors. Item girl Yana Gupta, actors Shekhar Suman and Renuka Shahane too are said to be participating this time.
